About

Endolinguistics studies the inner side of human language — the deep structures that orient how meaning emerges and tends to take sound — beneath the observable surface we usually call “language.” Where most of linguistics since the nineteenth century has worked from the outside in, describing the spoken and written output, endolinguistics asks the prior question: why does language take the shapes it does?

The discipline was founded in 1993 by C. S. Meulemans and J. Á. Elias. I studied with them, and I continue their research today, developing in particular its qualic and quantic dimension. This site presents that ongoing work.

Born from teaching

Endolinguistics did not begin as a theory of the mind. It began in the classroom. Meulemans and Elias had been teaching languages since the 1950s, and it was out of decades of that practice — watching how learners actually internalize a language — that the theory slowly took shape. The 1993 founding gathered and named what teaching had already revealed.

This matters for what kind of knowledge endolinguistics is: an inductive science, one that rose from practice toward theory, rather than descending from theory onto practice. Its first and still most direct application is applied endolinguistics — a distinctive methodology for the accelerated learning of languages. The deep codes are not only an object of study; they are a way of teaching, and the teaching came first.

Endo and exo

The prefix endo- (“internal”) marks a methodological choice, not a rejection. For a long time we have approached language from an exo point of view — focused on its manifestation, as if the language simply were the written or spoken code. That is a natural experimental stance, but it studies the output and leaves the origins untouched. Endolinguistics is the complementary approach: a way of accessing the inner language, the why’s of language. It does not oppose exolinguistics (what we usually just call “linguistics”) — it presupposes it and extends it, as a second branch alongside it.

Codes, not families

We model deep structure through abstract instruments called binary and ternary codes. A code orients a field of meaning; it does not define or denote one. Relations between words across languages are read not as simple historical copies but as expressions of a shared underlying system — so a “cognate” is better thought of as a co-derivative of a common substrate, while loanwords remain important but historical participations.

For this reason we do not study language “families.” The notion of family implies a genetic relationship that constrains the analysis; we work instead with macrosystems — the largest units that share deep codes. A macrosystem can be viewed as a single language, but we prefer to think of it as a unity in plurality: a complex system that recognizes the distinct languages within it — many rhythms held together by a shared deep order, not dissolved into one.

The current stage

Today endolinguistics integrates complexity theory and systemic modeling to understand language as an open, resonant field of meaning. Symbolic energies — encoded in binary and ternary structures — hold a dynamic balance as they circulate through the collective psyche of speakers; every innovation, from a child’s neologism to a mass-media slogan, perturbs the field and triggers compensatory reorganizations across the system. Language appears here not only as a structure of expression, but as a living, self-organizing network where its psychological, cultural, and mathematical dimensions converge.

What it is not

Endolinguistics is not a magical key to an original language of humanity, nor a way to resurrect a prehistoric or extinct tongue. It is not etymology, and it is not mysticism. Its claims are held as hypotheses earned by long labor, not settled results — a method built to be falsifiable, and discarded where it fails. If anything, it is a disciplined science of apparent coincidences, offered in the hope that it might help us understand one another a little better.
